Comments: On the 1901 UK Census taken 01 April, George Walter Brown is shown as being 44 years old with a wife and 8 dependent children. The 3rd Btn Royal Sussex Regiment was deployed to South Africa in March 1901. Given Brown's age and the status of his dependents, it is therefore unlikely that he would have been posted outside England.
A family group photo taken during the First World War shows Brown wearing a medal, probably the Volunteer Long Service Medal, King Edward VII version.
